Stay Connected for Free

A phone is essential. It's how you talk to your family, call for help, and find work. If you're on a tight budget, the federal government wants to help you stay connected.

You can receive a free smartphone and monthly service if you qualify. This is a legitimate federal benefit called Lifeline that millions of Americans use every day. We created this guide to help you understand the program and find a provider in your area.

Heads Up: We are an information guide, not a government agency. We don't hand out the phones ourselves. We help you find the official providers who do.

How to Get Started

Getting your free phone is simpler than you might think. Just follow these four steps:

1

Check Qualification

Do you get SNAP (Food Stamps), Medicaid, or SSI? If yes, you qualify. You also qualify if your income is low enough.

2

Gather Papers

Find your ID and a letter proving you get benefits (like your SNAP award letter). You'll need to show these.

3

Pick a Carrier

Not every company works in every zip code. Use our guide to find a legit provider that serves your neighborhood.

4

Fill out the form on the provider's website. It takes about 20 minutes. If approved, your phone comes in the mail.

The Programs Available to You

There are a few different ways to get help. Here is the main one you should know about.

Most Popular

Lifeline Assistance

This is the main government program. It gives you a monthly discount on phone service. Since many providers credit this discount against the cost of a basic plan, the service ends up being free for you.

  • What you get: Free talk, text, and data each month.
  • Where: Available in every state.
  • The Rule: Only one Lifeline phone per household.

Tribal Lands Lifeline

If you live on eligible Tribal lands, you get extra help. The discount is much higher because the government recognizes it can be harder and more expensive to stay connected in these areas.

  • What you get: Up to $34.25 off per month.
  • The Perk: Often means unlimited data plans at no cost.
  • Who: Residents of federally recognized Tribal lands.

Am I Eligible?

You generally qualify for a free phone if you meet one of these two conditions.

1. You Use These Benefits

If you are currently enrolled in any one of these programs, you're in:

  • SNAP / Food Stamps
  • Medicaid
  • SSI (Supplemental Security Income)
  • Federal Public Housing (Section 8)
  • Veterans Pension or Survivors Pension

2. Your Income is Low

If you don't use those benefits, you can still qualify if your total household income is under these limits:

1 Person $19,683 / yr
2 People $26,622 / yr
4 People $40,500 / yr

What Phone Will I Get?

The government pays for the service plan, but the phone companies provide the actual phone. This means you usually can't pick the exact model or color.

It's usually a smartphone: Most companies send out Android smartphones so you can use the internet and apps.
It will be capable: You can text, call, take photos, and use Wi-Fi.
It's free: You own the phone. You don't have to return it.
